This 0-6-0 tank engine was made by a British firm FOX WALKER of Bristol, which in 1878-1879 delivered 5 of these to the then Dutch East Indies' state railway the Staats Spoorwegen (SS). They were intended for work on the hilly section of the Bangil - Malang line which was the first SS undertaking in the island of Java.

Their original numbers were 1-5, after the 1912 renumbering schemes they carried the numbers 53-57. They were never absorbed into the Indonesian railway system.

By the time this picture was taken (My guess is after 1912), this particular engine has been modified with longer side tanks and a new cab. As the SS acquired newer mainline engines, the older ones like this one has been demoted from mainline work to the role of a switcher.
